Kau Sai Village Pier
Background
Kau Sai Village Pier was built in 1990s, located in Sai Kung District. The existing Kau Sau Village Pier is located in the inner estuary shielded by Kau Sai Chau and Tiu Chung Chau. There is also a Kau Sai Fish Cultural Zone near the pier that is sensitive to water and other environmental pollutions.
The pier is very small with insufficient berthing space; while both the pier and the approach channel have very shallow draft, especially during low tide, which make it unfit and dangerous for large vessels to navigate.
On the island of Kau Sai Chau, there is a historic Hung Shing Temple, of which the restoration works has won the Outstanding Project Award of the 2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation and was declared a monument in 2002. It attracts thousands of tourists and worshippers to visit during Hung Shing Festival every year. The current pier cannot cope with the current usage.
